"Past Due" Author talk at Shirlington - 11/30/09

Tonight at the Shirlington Branch Library New York Times national economics writer Peter S. Goodman will discuss his new work: Past Due: The End of Easy Money and the Renewal of the American Economy.

The book chronicles the roots and consequences of the recent recession, exploring the technology bubble of the 1990s, China's breakneck development and the American real estate bubble. Goodman also explores how the nation may construct a more sustainable economy, one perhaps focused on renewable energy and life sciences.

Join Shirlington Branch Library and Signature Theatre Monday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m., when journalist Steve Roberts discusses From Every End of This Earth: 13 families and the new lives they made in America , a poignant and eye-opening look at immigration in America today.

Part of the Planet Arlington Lecture Series, this event is also co-sponsored by the Arlington County Department of Parks and Recreation, Division of Cultural Affairs; Busboys and Poets and the Cultural Exchange Store. Shirlington's Featured Artist for November

Julian Oteyza, a painter from the Philippines, is the Shirlington Branch Library's featured artist for the month of November.

Oteyza paints on circular canvasses and views the circle as an "ancient mystical symbol...representing wholeness." We are pleased to be exhibiting his work in the spirit of Thanksgiving.

You can find examples of his work on our Flickr page, but it's even more exciting in person.

We will explore together the new and exciting possibilities of social sofware available on the Web. Discussion will include MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, and many more Web 2.0 applications.

From Page To Stage at Shirlington this Fall

Signature Theatre is “dark” on Mondays, but the lights are on at the Shirlington Branch Library.

Join us from 7-8 p.m. on the first Monday night of each month for our meet-the-artist series, when Signature staff and guest artists sit down for a engaging conversations about the art of making theatre.

Oct. 5, 2009: Conversation with J. Fred Shiffman. At long last, Fred is finally on stage at Signature, appearing with Emily Skinner and Hugh Nees in the musical Dirty Blonde.
Nov. 2, 2009: Conversation with Steven Cupo. A veteran of many Signature productions, Cupo first appeared at Signature as the Emcee in Cabaret, for which he won the Helen Hayes Award. This season he’s teaching a class for the Signature School called The Art of Cabaret. A performance will follow the conversation, upstairs in the Signature Lobby.
